Version One. 
Finished Size: 60"x 60"
This Giant Starburst variation is just like my original quilt
  • Fabric A (pink):
    • cut two strips, 10 1/2" x width of fabric (WOF)
      • subcut four rectangles, 10 1/2" x 20 1/2"
  • Fabric B (orange):
    • cut two strips, 10 1/2" x WOF
      • subcut four rectangles, 10 1/2" x 20 1/2"
  • Fabric C (aqua):
    • cut one strip, 11 1/2" x WOF
      • subcut two squares, 11 1/2" x 11 1/2"; and two squares, 10 1/2" x 10 1/2"
  • Fabric D (yellow):
    • cut one strip, 11 1/2" x WOF
      • subcut two squares, 11 1/2" x 11 1/2"; and two squares, 10 1/2" x 10 1/2"
  • Background Fabric: 2 1/2 yards
    • cut one square, 20 1/2" x 20 1/2"
    • cut one strip, 11 1/2" x WOF
      • subcut four squares, 11 1/2" x 11 1/2"
    • cut five strips, 10 1/2" x WOF
      • subcut twenty squares, 10 1/2" x 10 1/2"


Version two. 
Finished Size: 60"x 60"


  • Main Fabrics:
    • cut twenty four squares, 10 1/2" x 10 1/2"
    • cut four squares, 11 1/2" x 11 1/2"
  • White Fabric: 
    • cut five strips, 10 1/2" x WOF
      • subcut eight rectangles, 10 1/2" x 20 1/2"
      • subcut four squares, 10 1/2" x 10 1/2"
    • cut one strip, 11 1/2" x WOF
      • subcut four squares, 11 1/2" x 11 1/2"

  1. So excited :) I'm going to Pink Castle today to pick up my solids! For the second version, are we sewing two half-square triangles out of one square? Which part of the pattern do the four large squares correspond to? I just want to make sure I make my colors line up how I'd like :)

    1. Kels, I am not sure either. I was thinking that all the 11 1/2" blocks are the solid blocks shown. But in the second sample I would think there would be 8 blocks of that size cut not just 4? so I am not sure how this will go. I guess have to wait till next weeks lesson.

    2. I looked at it more closely, and it really does make sense. The 11.5" blocks are for making two half-square triangles where you draw a line across the center and sew a quarter of an inch on each side of the line, then cut along the line. The squares for the center and corners are wrapped up in the 24 10.5" squares which are also used for parallelogram blocks.

  2. I'm doing mine in HSTs instead of what I think will be 4 lots of flying geese...11.5 for hsts and 10.5 for solid squares
