just curious.

I am spending a bit of time this afternoon
doing a little online retail therapy.
shhh...dont' tell the BF :)

So as I am filling my shopping cart with lots of fabric goodies,
I am curious...

What's your standard fabric cut??

a yard?
a half yard?
a FQ?

  1. half yard is my go to cut...I tend to pick up fat quarters when Im actually at the quilt shop and one is already cut up...the only time I buy more than half a yard, is if I have a non quilting project in mind and know I need more. Happy shopping, show us what you got!!

  2. Oooh...a little fabric retail therapy, sounds like the PERFECT Sunday to me!! Enjoy!

My go to cut is a half yard unless I see something on sale that would be good for backing. Anytime I buy fat quarters I always find I need more, so I've tried to stop buying them. My local quilt stores package them so prettily though they can be hard to resist...

  3. It used to be fat quarters for me, but lately I've gone more to half-yards, especially for fabric that I think will be a good stash builder/basic. Those fat quarters just seem to get used up too quickly!

  4. half yard. Especially since most online stores don't do FQs of individual fabrics. And then, if I decide I don't want that much, I can cut 2 FQ's and swap swap swap! Happy shopping

  5. half yard unless it's a staple or something I really LOVE then it's a yard!!

  6. definitely FQs - I wish I could afford to get bigger cuts, but unfortunately not

  7. A yard....love to have the extra for the stash!

  8. I love getting FQs, but I often find myself wanting more! If it's something I REALLY love, I'll get a yard.

  9. I too usually get 1/2 yd. pieces, but those fat quarters --when I find online stores that carry them -- are great for lots of variety! Hope you show us what you picked out!

  11. When I'm making something non-quilting, it's usually a half to a yard depending on the project. When I started quilting recently, oh my gosh, I thought charm packs and layer cakes were the only way to go! They were perfect, no cutting, and ideal for my skill level...then I bought my first fat quarter bundle! I'm kinda lovin' on fat quarters and I think that will be my standard cut. Who knows a year from now 1/2 yards might be it. But for the money, a 1/2 yard could be a better price. I agree with Becky above..swap the extra!

  12. Lately, I'm a half-yard girl. That way, I've usually got more than enough for what I need. If I think something might make a good bag, then I go for a full yard, if I can. Happy shopping!

  13. I'm not sure. I used to buy by-the-yard, but now with my sewing allowance, I don't buy anything unless I have a specific project in mind for it (because if I don't, chances are I might not use it). That probably doesn't help you any, lol. If it's for a dress, around 2 yards, a bag, about 1 yard, and for quilting projects fq's or 1/2 yards.

  14. If I really want the fabric a lot, I do half yards. FQ's are nice, but half yards are better! ;o)

  15. Depends! I like buying bundles, so if I need something to "go with", it will be yardage, like for sashing or backgrounds. Sometimes I find something I just love a lot, and it will be up to 2 yards. Mostly, when I'm just getting a little of this and a little of that, it's 1/2 yards. Sounds like that's the norm here!

  16. Mostly fat quarters and half yards unless I LOVE the fabric and then I go for a yard or more. Isn't it great to be able to shop for fabric 24/7? Or is that dangerous? Hmmmm.

  17. I usually buy a yard when I am buying on line. If I think it will be used as a background fabric I would buy two yards. I don't have a lot of fabric in my stash, but it's always nice to be able to go to your stash and having enough fabric to make a little baby quilt. Have a great week!

  18. I usually do a 1/2 yard since I always want to buy so many prints.

  19. I won't lie. My quilting's pretty formulaic. I pick out one print for both an inner border and binding (1 yard total) and then a larger outer border (1.5-2yds). The center of a quilt usually involves a pre-cut or some scraps from my stash and at least 2 or so yards of a background. Here's to a little bit of retail therapy!

  20. quarter yards or FQ's sometimes half yards if that's the smallest they'll cut. A full yard if I really really really love it or if it's on sale big time!
