Fresh Mini Quilt Club | April 2013: take two

IMG_1333Playing around with fabric placement is one of the simplest + quickest ways to get an entirely different look out of a quilt block/pattern. Yesterday's Electrify mini quilt, from the Fresh Mini Quilt Club series, was made using two prints + a background fabric. The block layout resulted in two pin-wheels, of sorts!

After finishing the first mini quilt I wanted to play around with the same block design, this time using scraps!  Each block uses one jelly roll strip (2 1/2" x WOF) -- I can't wait to make a bigger version using an entire jelly roll bundle.

IMG_1351I straight-line quilted the mini quilt using a neutral Aurifil thread & my walking foot -- it's my go-to quilting combo. The lines are 1/4" apart -- not  quite as close as the original mini quilt! I love how the quilting pops on the back of the mini quilt -- especially with the brown stripe binding fabric.

The 4 x 4 block layout finishes at 32" x 32".

I hope you are all having a great week!

  3. I love all of the fabrics you used and the fact that each one is made with a J.R. strip is awesome. I'm totally crushing on your fabric choice for the back as well. Might I ask what it is? Also, I haven't looked but do you by chance have a tutorial for making a flying geese block like this. I'm somewhat new to quilting and I'd LOVE to learn how to do this.

  4. A few years back, I made a full size quilt with this block layout. I still get compliments on it. Your quilting is so neat (as in cool)! Lovely!

  6. Nice block! I love the fresh take on the multi-directionality of the the flying geese, as well as the color scheme. I've pinned it to my "Quilty Goodness" board on Pinterest (with proper credit, of course!). Feel free to follow me if you'd like: http://pinterest.com/lipglass/quilty-goodness/

  9. What kind of fabrics do you like to use for backings? Patterns? Anything that you don't like enough for the front? Sometimes I have trouble parting with a fabric just to be the backing...

  10. I am doing a temperature quilt with flying geese. 366 geese for the whole year. Something like this could work if I do 6 blocks
