Granny Square Quilt

Earlier this week, I mentioned I'm on a mission to finish it in 2013. Now who's ready to see the first finish? I started my Granny Square Quilt in the Spring of 2012 using this tutorial from Blue Elephant Stitches. I chose to use a fresh + cheery combination of fabrics -- all of which came from my stash -- and paired them with Kona white. The colors just pop off the quilt and remind me of Spring!

My favorite thing about this quilt is the binding! I've always loved the look of bias binding but I'm not a fan of making it. Well here's a fool proof way to achieve the bias binding look -- use zig zag or chevron fabric. The fabric I used for this quilt binding is from Simply Color by V and Co. It comes in gray (my favorite!), green, egg plant, and orange. The scale on this zig zag print is perfect for 2 1/2" double-fold binding! You can find all four color ways at Pink Castle Fabrics and Fat Quarter Shop.
Happy Sunday!

DS picnic + fairgrounds quilt.
hello, friends! i hope you are all having a fantastic weekend! it's hard to believe we are almost a full week into August, phew! remember when i mentioned last week that i was able to sneak a bit of sewing in at the lake? well here's the first finished project -- my DS picnic + fairgrounds quilt.
i started this quilt over a year ago, right after Denyse Schmidt released her first two fabric lines with Joann Fabrics. these fabrics make my heart sing, especially paired with Robert Kaufman Kona White! something about them reminds me of my grandma + life on the farm. which is why i gifted a mini quilt version to her for Christmas last year -- and i'm happy to report she uses the mini quilt everyday!

the quilt pattern comes from the Spring 2011 issue of American Patchwork and Quilting: Top Ten Quilt Stores. i especially love how the traditional feel of the fabrics + colors compliments the overall quilt design. finishing up at 54" x 54", it's the perfect picnic quilt size and i'm really looking forward to using it this summer!
this quilt was entirely pieced + quilted using my favorite Aurifil thread, 50wt in white. seriously.love.this.thread. using my walking foot, i quilted a big "X" in the center of the quilt and echoed the lines out every 1/4" making for some fabulous quilted texture. that's the same quilting technique i used on my grandma's mini quilt!

the tumbler quilt [a quilty finish!]
It's a quilty finish! Woot, woot!
Until this past weekend. Like I said, Sewing Summit nerves are translating into some serious sewing mojo and the urge to finish up some old WiPs. So I pieced a back, basted and quilted this all in one day!
Way back in July, my Go! Baby landed on my doorstep just days before a trip to the lake. So I packed an assortment of Kona cottons and my Go! Baby + tumbler die and headed North for a week long of sewing and fishing fun. One week later, the quilt top was complete. And then it sat...and sat...and sat. Pretty much par for the course. :)
Until this past weekend. Like I said, Sewing Summit nerves are translating into some serious sewing mojo and the urge to finish up some old WiPs. So I pieced a back, basted and quilted this all in one day!
I decided to go with a wavy organic quilting (my new fav!) and follow the direction of the tumbler pattern. If you haven't given this method of quilting a try, I highly recommend it! Similar to straight line quilting, your walking foot makes it easy-peasy.
There's something so great about a quilt fresh out of the wash. So crinkly and yummy!
Oh, hey! If you want to make a tumbler quilt of your own and win a Go! Baby, check out my giveaway! Today is the last day to enter!

Bloggers' Quilt Festival. [crazy {9} quilt].
I am very excited for my first ever entry in Amy's
There are hundreds and hundreds of amazing quilts linked up already,
so go check it out!
About a year ago, I was introduced to the quilty blog world by my mom (thanks mom!). I had taken a new job, moved to a new town, and was looking for something to occupy my time in the evenings. Let me tell you, blog world was just the ticket! I quickly fell in love with Oh Fransson! (how can you not?!?) which is where the inspiration for this quilt came from.
I also tackled FMQ (on my home machine) for the first time with this quilt. Up until this finish, I was fortunate enough to be able to use the long-arm machine at my LQS (where I worked for 5 years). Being that it was my first experience on a smaller machine, I opted for an all over meander. I love the way a meander looks after being washed and dried--all crinkly and cuddly, yum!
The weekend I finished this quilt, we happened to get a record snow storm here in Iowa (check out the snow drifts in the photos!). So with travel not possible, I was forced to use what leftover scraps I had to piece the back. I decided to carryover the 9 patch feel and couldn't be happier with the results.

NEW PROJECTS
Are you all familiar with the Cherry House quilt along that is popping up all over blog land? I instantly fell in love with this quilt. Something about the Kona Solids and the simple, modern design. Perfection. The only thing holding me back from jumping in on all the fun is the finished quilt size. Following her directions, it only measures 36" x 36". Seeing as I don't have kids (so no need for baby quilts and/or doll quilts) and I don't really need anymore small wall quilts, it just isn't for me. So I decided to do a little design remix of my own using some of the FQs I received from the GenX Kona Your World Swap. Let me just tell you, I. Am. Loving. This. Quilt. As of now, the quilt top is almost complete (you can see a bit here) and I can't wait to quilt this one. Hopefully soon!
Top Secret Quilt
This quilty project took up quite the chunk of time this weekend, and probably will take up more in the weeks to come. While I really would like to share it will you all, it has to remain classified for the time being. But, I promise it will be worth the wait.
NEW and FINISHED PROJECTS
Have you noticed? The other night, I decided a little nip/tuck of sorts was in order for the Canoe Ridge Creations blog. That counts as a finish right? It's blogging/quilting related, so I will take it! Thanks for all the kind comments so far!
FINISHED PROJECTS
In love with this quilt. Enough said.
ONGOING PROJECTS
Slowly, but surely I am making progress on this one. I am about half way through cutting my fabric out (which I am really hoping is the toughest part of this quilt) and I am itching to get started piecing it.
MMM Swap
No Progress.
...And, that's a wrap!
MMM Swap
No Progress.
...And, that's a wrap!
As far as the rest of my list goes, I have decided to drop it for the time being. I haven't touched any of it in so long that they hardly count as works-in-progress anymore. They are slowly creeping their way to UFO land (if they haven't already arrived there). So, new blog look and new WiP list. Can you all live with that?
This Week's Stats
Last week's total: I am saying 3. :)
New Projects: 3
Finished Projects: 2

{Sew} Modern Monday #1
Welcome to the first ever {Sew} Modern Monday at Canoe Ridge Creations!
One of my goals for 2011 is to finish some of my WiPs, there is no shortage of those over here. :) So starting the year off with a bang, here is my first finish of 2011.
I originally saw this quilt (sorry I can't seem to find the post) from Twin Fibers and I was hooked. It uses 2 1/2 inch squares, perfect for this Amy Butler charm pack.
I first sewed the squares onto the Kona solid background, and then followed these lines in my quilting. I really like the look of the double stitch lines.
I love the look of the raw edges.
Quilt stats:
Name: Scrappy Squares
Size: 38" x 38"
Fabrics: Amy Butler and Kona Natural
Now it's time for the fun part, your finishes!
Here are the rules:
1.) Link up a recent sewing project using modern fabrics and/or designs. Please link to the specific post, not just your blog home page.
2.) Link back to my blog in your own post. If you want, grab the {Sew} Modern Monday button over on my side bar and add it to your blog page. That way you won't have to remember each week.
3.) Check out other people's {Sew} Modern Monday links. What fun is a linky party without comments? Please take the time to comment on other people's posts.
4.) If you like, join the flickr group and share your pictures there as well.

Birthday Celebrations and A Finished Project
Today is my little sister Lindsey's 17th Birthday! She had "hinted" about some Monaluna fabric she had seen on the Oh, Fransson! blog a few weeks ago. So with a little checking I chose a collection of grays, blues, and lime greens. This Fabricworm package arrived yesterday just in time for today's celebrations. Happy Birthday Lindsey! I hope you enjoy!

All Squared Up
Here's one of my latest quilts I have been working on. I just love Amy Butler fabrics right now, and her fabric was just the right choice for this simple quilt.
I chose straight line quilting to accent the simplicity of the squares. The finished size ended up being 25" x 25", the perfect size for a table top.
Sometimes small projects like these are great for motivation to finish even bigger projects. I am hoping to sew the binding on later this week, so more pictures to come!
